SYSTEMS THINKING & SUSTAINABLE BUSINESSES : Poetry - Spring 2005

GROUP 1

Take time out and relax

Smile, breathe.

Figure out what makes you happy

And share it with someone

Life on earth is magical!

Don’t let it pass by too quickly

Enjoy what you’ve got

Entice others to do the same

Eat vanilla ice cream in the rain.

Amelia Musser

In nature it is said, you see your true reflection

The time we take to see its magic changes our direction.

The earth is but a chasm, a labyrinth to solve

Humans but a dozer, oh how we did evolve.

Vanilla beans and saffron spices are worth their weight in gold

Yet the stories of the species gone are never to be told.

Let the problems of the air we breathe, entice in you a goal

For with the help of others, it’s time we take control.

Lucas Roe

I walk with spirit, with determination.

The sun is my energy.

I feel it deep inside of me.

With each breath sunshine fills my lungs, my heart, my muscles.

Sunshine and blue sky seep through every pour of my body.

Like magic, I am alive again.

I notice everything:

            The laughter across the street,

The vanilla patches that slowly shrink away,

The brown earth that peeks into view.

The sun is enticing to us, energizing us all.

It is the spirit from which all life flows.

And it has returned to remind us of the vivacity with which we are capable of living.

Brynna Larsen

Magical seasons, magical Earth

Breath in the leafy greenness of a summer day

Feel the wind blow through the trees as they sway

Into a tawny fall enticing you to play

In the falling leaves that will soon decay

After being entombed by soft vanilla flakes

That turn into anticipated April showers that makes

Spring the season of rejuvenation and rebirth

And completes the seasons of magical mother earth.

Chelsey Wolfgram

Enticed to act, but taken back

The last or first to breathe.

The weight of earth is not its worth

So what’s the worth of me?

A magic bin, a manic sin

I sink into the sea,

Vanilla dreams, or so it seems

Awakened I am free.

Madison

The question that every student asks

Is home here or is home home?

A higher education enticed us here

Liberal studies teach us about the earth

The magic of making new friends

Made it easier to stay away from home

The magic of fresh Babcock ice cream

Made it easy for the freshman fifteen

Travis North

To Senegal

I still can smell her vanilla skin in my room

As if she wanted to leave her presence

The image of her eyes staring at me still burns in the back of my mind

I can’t concentrate on anything else

It is almost like she put a magic spell on me

Enticing me to never let her go

But now she is gone

I can’t even breathe thinking about how it will be one year before I see her again

Tomorrow, she will be on the other side of earth

Ryu Suzuki

Earth

Iridescent stars

Entice and take my breath

High above the earth

Travis North

Vanilla is middle-of-the-road.

Life is an experience, not a chore.

Take a stand against a vanilla life.

Don’t just breath, FEEL!

Experience the interconnectedness of Earth.

Of its simple, yet complex magic.

Alter your own experiences,

Change something small for the better.

Entice change in your surroundings.

One good leads to another –

Exponential goodness starts with you.

Tim Puchter

I breathe in short quick breaths

Huff.. puff.. huff.. puff

The cold night air numbing my cheeks

Exhausted and elated I trek home

Class is over for the week I’m free!

Huff.. puff.. huff.. puff

And yet sadness creeps in.

How long have I walked these streets home?

The sweet vanilla scents from Greenbush trying to entice me to indulge.

But those days are numbered now

My departure from this place is looming

Huff.. puff.. huff.. puff

Eminent

Sad

I should take comfort in the knowledge,

That I merely leave Madison and not this earth;

And that the magic and memories will never fade.

But creature of comfort I hesitate to leave

And embark into the unknown

Huff.. puff.. huff.. puff

The Others

I see them on the street

and smile

their vanilla lives are magic that I breathe.

I watch them in their cars

and sigh

I want to entice them outside of their boxes.

The Earth groans under our weight.

What will it take?

The smog?  The epidemic?  The flood?

Or the softer things . . .

the gift of a hug?

Leah Hart

The magic of nature entices me

As I take a breath of fresh air

I can taste the earth

Like sweat vanilla melting in my mouth

Pure and simple

Soothing my soul and clearing my mind

Lisa Ashenbrenner

University

Amidst the clustered buildings, my newfound wings.

An isthmus hugging a world of hippies

Vanilla skies, a magic lake

fill evenings with a state of bliss.

Scholars, custodians, partiers,

breathe of the same sweet liberal air.

“Protect the Earth” the posters cry

although the average college guy

will shake his head and wonder . . . why?

Leah Hart

The crisp night air breathes life into me

The sweat aroma of vanilla pours out of a shop nearby

The magical atmosphere of State Street entices me

But the earth’s harsh elements soon awaken me from this fantasy

As the wind and snow whip against my face

I must go home

Fall Morning in Madison

I woke up at the crack of dawn

There is no explanation for this

I never wake up this early unless I have to

Tried to go back to sleep but couldn’t

Surfed through the channels but nothing was on

It is too early

Decided to go for a run

My footsteps automatically took me to the lake

It was a crisp fall morning

Cool fresh air I breathed in revitalized my out-of-shape lungs

Sun was starting to shed life on Lake Monona

Never seen a sun rise over a horizon in Madison

Vanilla like fog was slowly dancing on the surface of water

I haven’t seen a single car polluting the air

It was as if all the automobiles magically disappeared in a single night

Dead silence besides the sound of my feet hitting the ground

Who ever said the city is an antinomy of nature?

Natural beauty is all around us, if you only look

Even in the heart of the city

Ryu Suzuki

You can’t have the earth without letting her breathe.

You can’t let her breathe without letting her work her magic.

You can’t let her work her magic, if you sour her vanilla essence.

You can’t sour her essence if you aren’t enticed to take advantage of her.

So why are some enticed to take

When it’s better to give than to receive.

Ted Condon
