GROUP 1
Magic
sprinkled over those
who see perfection
here and now-
Enticed not by what may be an after life; assignments of heaven.
Breathe in and satiate your senses
to ambrosia,
vanilla,
the nectars of this earth.
Realize
this is the garden.
Jennifer Karvelas
The Earth beneath me grounds me as I walk
The air fills my lungs as I breathe in deeply
The horizon entices
The sky above me, a shade of vanilla
Magic.
Hannah Hill
As I walked back during this cold winter night
I was barely able to breathe in the freezing air
I was enticed by the beauty of this Earth
It’s magic enticed my confused soul.
Xu (Jack) Han
Waking up from much needed sleep
I look out the window,
my breath cold on the glass
I’m living in a magic snow globe.
Sprinkles of vanilla that float to the earth
An endless snowfall amid the winter weather
Breathe the beauty of the season.
Erin Meyers
It’s been too long since I’ve touched the earth.
I mean, really touch it.
Hold it in my hands and feel its magic,
The kind you can only feel in the wilderness.
To breathe fresh air
that isn’t masked in cherry, or vanilla, or floral perfume,
or any perfume, for that matter.
I used to spend days, weeks, months, with no agenda.
Back when a river rapid or a long portage
Enticed me through the Northwoods,
Back when “wandering” didn’t mean “lost.”
Chelsea Karrels
Entice my soul.
For I am not proud or joyful,
And I do not breathe with hope.
Discover magic.
There are places to go,
And more on this earth.
Look to the sky.
The vanilla clouds progress,
And so will these people.
Smile to the sun.
Your neighbors may save you,
And those that you love.
Katy Higley
Magic entices even the smallest branch
Of vanilla
When the Earth breathes.
Kassie Hauser
Cold icy sting
Promise of warmth entices
Longing for spring
Magic through winter slices
Vanilla mild
Earth from frigid blanket born
Sensations wild
Green buds push, the ice is torn
Aimee Dedeyne
I think I’ll plant a garden this year,
With m&ms and ginger beer.
And six rows of vanilla beans,
To help shade the fudge ice cream.
Into the ground I’ll work butterscotch,
And eagerly, the gummi worms I’ll watch.
They’ll aerate the soil and make it rich,
And how about chocolate for the drainage ditch?
The magic of gardens is a wonder to behold,
A promise of new growth and treats untold.
I’ll breathe in the damp earth of spring,
And eagerly wait for the goodies it’ll bring.
I may be enticed to plant a snickers bar,
Though deer can smell caramel from quite far.
So maybe I’ll just stick to Almond Joy,
Oreos and Chips Ahoy.
Of course, then I’ll have to reap and sow,
I may be sore from head to toe.
And then the mud and muck and dirt!
It may just ruin my pants and shirt.
Actually, this garden thing may be too much strain,
Planting, weeding, and waiting for rain.
It is all quite time consuming, I hear.
I think perhaps I’ll wait till next year.
Melissa Gavin
snow sticking on the earth’s floor
white flakes piling like vanilla ice cream
enticing the magical inner child
to be released
running, playing, breathing,
forgetting about our adult troubles

Another Monday morning is knocking at my window,
Impatiently waiting for me to wake and breathe it in.
The earth outside is stirring with life.
I stir too, avoiding the daily grind.
Wrapped inside my blanket
It seems nothing could entice me to get up
and join the fast-paced bustle of the city.
Today, I want to keep it slow,
To stay in,
To hold on to what I have.
The aroma of vanilla seeps under my door,
“He must have made the coffee”, I mumble.
It lends me its strength, it is the magic I need
to say hello to Monday.
Chelsea Karrels
The Earth is filled with much mysterious magic
The ability to breathe is magic
The ability to smell and be enticed by flavors such as vanilla is also magic
Magic fills this Earth, and surrounds us in our everyday lives
Xu (Jack) Han
The other day
I came across a vanilla bean.
He was tall and skinny
And wearing an old brown suit.
“Why are all vanilla beans men?” I asked
He wouldn’t answer
And it enticed me more.
I took a deep breath
And asked again.
“Why are all vanilla beans men?”
After a long pause
He looked at me and said,
“Why are all humans women?”
“Maybe you need to look
Outside of the box”, I said.
He looked at me and said,
“Maybe you need to look outside of the Earth.”
Kassie Hauser
Entice me.
You have the earth at your fingertips.
Do magic.
You breathe the scent of a liar.
Go do it.
You laugh because you can not.
So, entice me.
Erin Meyers
A child once asked his father of all the wonderful things around him:
How does the lightning bug glow and give us light at night for our walks dad?
-that’s magic. Earth magic.
And why do the dogs like to help us catch food and protect us?
-Earth magic, son.
And why does the aloe plant help heal my burns?
-earth magic.
And the apples that grow on trees that we eat to survive, why are they sweet?
-earth magic.
And then one day the boy saw terrible things and asked his father about them:
Why does the sea get angry and crush the living things on the shore?
-son, that is the earth magic again.
And why do the tornadoes destroy all in its path?
-earth magic.
And why does disease kill our people?
-earth magic
Then the boy asked:
But dad, why does the earth use its magic for good and for bad?
-because son, to keep the balance, is magical.
